The ability to communicate is imperative to be a part of one’s community. Regardless of a person’s ability to speak, WLRS, work with individuals and home staff so that individuals can fully participate in daily activities at home, at work and in other places in the community. This may include:

  • placing a food order at a restaurant,
  • having a list of items needed for grocery shopping
  • following directions from a co-worker or supervisor at one’s place of work
  • recognizing traffic signs for safety
  • communicating feelings
  • assistance in developing positive social skills to effectively interact with others

Words, pictures or recorded sound can be utilized by individuals to express their needs or wishes.

Services range from the development of basic communication to the use of computers and augmentative communication boards. Training is also provided to staff and family members on the use of sign language for individuals that use this mode of communication with others.
