Behavior Shaping

Wood Lane Residential Services practices an approach of behavior support known as "Behavior Shaping." This program is based on Lee Graber's Capability Teaching and has been successful at Wood Lane and around the country.

The concept is simple: individuals who exhibit challenging behavior are taught strategies to help them be in control of their lives. Behavior is not controlled. Instead, individuals are offered choices that empower them to change their own lives.

Wood Lane does not have time-out rooms as some facilities still do. Staff members interact with individuals who have challenging behavior utilizing sensitivity, understanding and redirection. This results in a benefit to both individuals and staff. Individuals learn to thrive and grow, allowing staff to focus on teaching.

Individuals are encouraged to manage their own behavior. Individuality is applauded and behavior is not "programmed." The staff becomes familiar with the individuals' personality, likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams.

Staff direct, encourage and support all of the following in accordance with our Behavior Shaping program:
  • all emotion is encouraged
  • all communication is acknowledged
  • behavior is not limited, but redirected
  • consistency is provided with structure, substance and purpose
  • individuals and staff practice the art of persuasion, negotiation and compromise
  • individuals have the opportunity to utilize decision making and problem solving
  • importance is placed on discovering individual capabilities

At Wood Lane Residential, our staff serve as teachers who constantly strive to help individuals make appropriate choices and become as independent as possible.
