| Wood Lane Residential Services practices an approach of behavior support known as "Behavior Shaping." This program is based on Lee Graber's Capability Teaching and has been successful at Wood Lane and around the country. The concept is simple: individuals who exhibit challenging behavior are taught strategies to help them be in control of their lives. Behavior is not controlled. Instead, individuals are offered choices that empower them to change their own lives.
Wood Lane does not have time-out rooms as some facilities still do. Staff members interact with individuals who have challenging behavior utilizing sensitivity, understanding and redirection. This results in a benefit to both individuals and staff. Individuals learn to thrive and grow, allowing staff to focus on teaching.
Individuals are encouraged to manage their own behavior. Individuality is applauded and behavior is not "programmed." The staff becomes familiar with the individuals' personality, likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams. |
